California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP)

 

  1. Smarter Balanced – New computer-adaptive assessments for English-language arts (ELA) and mathematics in grade 11. The Smarter Balanced operational test will be administered for the first time in 2015.
  2. California Standards Tests (CST) for science in grade 10.
  3. California Modified Assessment (CMA) for science in grade 10.
  4. California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA) for ELA and mathematics in grades 9-11 and for science in grade 10.
  5. Standards-based Tests in Spanish (STS) for reading-language arts (RLA) in grades 9-11. The following Spanish-speaking students are eligible to take the STS, (1) English learners (ELs) who have been enrolled in U.S. schools or territories for less than 12 cumulative months, and (2) ELs receiving instruction in Spanish regardless of the length of time in U.S. schools or territories (enrolled in a Spanish Bilingual or Dual Language Program). It is important to note that the STS does not take the place of the CST/CMA or Smarter Balanced. Students in grades 2-11 who meet the criteria to the take the STS will take the STS in addition other mandated tests.

 

California English Language Development Test (CELDT) Annual and Initial – Grades K-12


State and federal law require Districts to administer a state test of English Language Proficiency (ELP) for: (1) newly enrolled students whose primary language is not English as an Initial Assessment (IA), and (2) students who are English learners as an Annual Assessment (AA). The State assessment is known as CELDT.

 

Early Assessment Program (EAP) Assessments – Grade 11.
 

All grade 11 students are eligible to take the EAP ELA. Grade 11 students eligible to take the CST for Algebra II or Summative High School Mathematics may participate in EAP mathematics test.

 

California Physical Fitness Test (PFT) – Grade 9

 

All students (including the physically handicapped) enrolled in grade 9 must be tested. This includes students who are repeating a grade as well as students in alternate programs including continuation, independent study, Community Day Schools (CDS), and non-public schools. Students not enrolled in a physical education class during the testing window because of a state-approved waiver for block scheduling, must still be tested.

 

California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) – grades 10, 11, 12

 

All students in California are required to pass the CAHSEE to receive a high school diploma. Passing scores on both the ELA and mathematics tests are part of the requirements needed to obtain a high school diploma from LAUSD.

 

PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT)

 

The PSAT/NMSQT, co-sponsored by the College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), is a comprehensive assessment program that offers a valuable array of free services for students, parents/families and educators.

  1. PSAT/NMSQT enables students and parents/families to:
    1. receive an earlier and better gauge of students’ post-secondary preparation.
    2. adjust students’ 11th and 12th grade schedules based on data.
    3. prepare for the SAT and qualify to enter competitions for scholarships and participate in recognition programs, i.e., National Merit® Scholarship Program, National Achievement® Scholarship Program, National Hispanic Recognition Program, National Scholarship Service.
    4. receive information from colleges (Student Search Service®) and access tools and resources critical to college and career planning, i.e., My College Quick Start.
  2. PSAT/NMSQT provides high school staff with access to the following reports:
    1. AP Potential™. This online tool helps schools grow their AP® programs by identifying students for AP courses. (Research indicates there is a strong correlation between PSAT/NMSQT scores and AP Exam results. PSAT/NMSQT scores are stronger predictors of students' AP Exam grades than the more traditional signposts such as high school grades, grades in previous same-discipline course work, and the number of same-discipline courses a student has taken.)
    2. Summary of Answers and Skills (SOAS). This online report allows high school staff to take a closer, detailed look at students’ academic skills by analyzing student performance on each PSAT/NMSQT test question. Available online at https://scores.collegeboard.org in January.
