VOALA UPWARD BOUND bOyle Heights

The overall intent of the Upward Bound program is to help high school students improve their academic skills, motivation, and self-confidence in preparation for post-secondary education. The program attempts to identify and develop the personal talents and strengths of each student with the hope that he or she will discover his or her individual goals and the value of education in reaching those goals. We ask that students be serious about themselves, serious about their desire to improve  academically, and serious about their commitment to Upward Bound. Amidst all this seriousness, we also expect to have lots of fun.

Upward Bound respects each student as a capable and competent individual. Thus, each student learns to take more responsibility for him/her as the program encourages and challenges him/her to move in a positive direction. While fostering more responsible, independent behavior from students, Upward Bound also encourages a heightened sense of social responsibility. Each participant in the program has a vital part to play in creating a positive atmosphere in the program that encourages all participants to grow.

"As a member of the Upward Bound program I have received academic guidance through after school tutoring, Saturday class sessions, and summer classes. I have also received college exposure through college tours and opportunities to dorm at colleges."
