Notable Athletic Alumni 1960’s

Carlos Alfaro graduated in 1966. He was a medallist in the AAU 50 kilometer run and was runner-up in the Los Angeles (Elysian Park) Marathon.


Rodgers Cain graduated in 1966 and was one of Roosevelt’s finest all-around athletes. He was All Eastern League second team in baseball in 1965-66. He was All LA City third team in football in 1965. He also was high jump champion in

the 1965 All LA City Track Meet. He played minor league baseball.


Ray Chavez graduated in 1961. He was an All LA City football fullback in 1960 and was All Eastern League second team in baseball in 1960 and 1961. He attended East LA JC and then transferred to Los Angeles State. While at Los Angeles

State, he was chosen for the All CCAA team in 1965. During the 1965 season he carried the ball 153 times and ran for 646 yards.


Joe Clayton graduated in 1969 and was an All LA City second team pick in basketball that year. He averaged 21.1 points per game. He went on to Gonzaga where he was an All Big Sky pick in 1972, averaging 14.7 points per game.


Joe De La Vera graduated in 1967 and was an All Eastern League football pick in 1966. He lettered at Long Beach State in 1969.


Mike Garrett, graduated 1962. All city running back for the Roughriders. First Heisman trophy winner at USC in 1966. Played for the kansa city Chiefs and the San Diego Chargers.


Tyrone Hudson graduated in 1965. He was selected as Eastern League Football Most Valuable Player in' 1965. He went on to LACC, where he was a jumior college All-American. From LACC he went to USC where he was selected All Pacific Cost

and led the PAC 8 in interceptions in 1969. Played with the New York Jets for two years.


Tony Ioane graduated in 1967 and was an All Eastern League basketball player that year. He went on to Idaho State, where he averaged 15.7 points per game in 1969.


Robert Peters graduated in 1965 and was an All LA City Football halfback in 1964. He lettered in football at Utah State in 1966 and 1967


Walter Simon graduated in 1964 and was the All LA City Baketball Player of the Year that season. He averaged 30.1 points per game. He went on to Utah and averaged 15.3 points per game in 1968. His son Miles plays basketball for the

University of Arizona.


Loretta Stevenson graduated in 1969 and was a fine sprinter for the LA Mercurettes.


Lenzy Stuart graduated in 1968 and was All City in basketball that year, averaging 21.5 points per game. He played college ball at Seattle where he averaged 4.6 points per game in 1973. Knee trouble seriously hampered his career.


Zeno Veal graduated in 1967. He was a two time All Conference football player at East LA JC IN 1968 AND 1969. He lettered one season for UCLA in 1971.


Atoy Wilson graduated in 1968 and was the U.S. Novice Figure Skating champion in 1966.
